• Problem /Situation

The client, located in Mexico , needed an automated system for moving large coils of steel from different processing areas in the plant to shipping.

• Solution and Approach

The mechanical design used a series of coil cars to move the coils and lifts to raise and lower the coils onto the cars. The control system consisted of five ControlLogix processors, six PanelView HMI terminals, thirteen drives, eight hydraulic power units and level 2 interfaces. Several different communication mechanisms were required to achieve the proper control. DeviceNet, ControlNet and Ethernet were all used to interface the IO, drives and HMI’s.
